Examzi for children in care

A tutor for every child in care, wherever they live.

Young people talk it through with Examzi, out loud, any evening, in children's homes and with foster carers. Their virtual school can fund it.

Education shouldn't stop when a placement changes.

Young people in care are often out of school or between placements. Staff want to help in the evenings, but they aren't tutors, and Regulation 8 expects measurable progress.

Examzi gives each young person a patient tutor they can talk to, and gives your team the evidence to show it's working.

Evenings are when most revision happens.
  1. 3:30School's out. For some, there wasn't school today.
  2. 6:00Tea, then homework. Staff want to help, but they aren't maths tutors.
  3. 9:15Revision, finally. Ace is still here.

For young people: a tutor that listens.

  • They talk it through, out loud. Ace listens and asks the next question, so they do the thinking. No typing, no forms, no judgement.
  • It sketches on a live board as it explains, and tries a different way when something doesn't land.

Jay and Ace, talking it through

The lesson above, with sound and captions. Both voices are AI; Jay is a made-up pupil.

Jay is a made-up pupil, and both voices are AI.

Read the whole conversation
  1. Jay: Hey Ace, I don't get this one. Can you help?
  2. Ace: Of course. What's stopping x being on its own?
  3. Jay: The plus six?
  4. Ace: Yes! So what can we do to both sides?
  5. Jay: Take 6 away. So 3x is 15.
  6. Ace: Lovely. And x?
  7. Jay: 15 shared by 3. It's 5!
  8. Ace: You worked that out. Same thing to both sides, every time.

Snap & Mark, on paper

+2 marks recovered

  • Snap & Mark: they photograph a handwritten answer and get feedback in seconds.
  • A personal study plan, one manageable step a day, up to their exams.
  • It moves with them: the same account and progress if their placement or school changes.

Engaging for young people. Simple for staff.

A preview of the key worker view. Names are made up.

    • Sit alongside for a session today. With the dashboard, send encouragement or leave a handover note for the next shift.
    • Works on a phone during evening rounds.

Designed for young people in care from the start.

Wherever it's used

  • Lesson audio is never saved by Examzi. OpenAI, which powers the voice, may hold it for up to 30 days only to check for misuse, then deletes it. The written lesson is kept so Ace remembers where they got to, and only the young person can read it in full. None of it is used to train AI.
  • Accounts and progress are stored in Europe. Voice and marking are processed by OpenAI in the US, under the safeguards in our privacy policy. Data is never sold.
  • Young people are told it's an AI, not a person. There is no chat with other people, no public profile and no adverts.
  • A complete pack before you start: a DPIA pre-filled for you to review and complete, our safeguarding statement, and how Examzi maps against the DfE's Generative AI: product safety expectations.
  • Flags will go to your home's or agency's named DSL and deputy. In development Your DSL will see what raised it and decide who is told. Key workers will see only that a flag exists; in foster care, nothing the household sees changes.
  • Until then, Ace responds with care and points the young person to the adult looking after them. It doesn't alert anyone and isn't a filtering or monitoring system, so keep your own in place. In an emergency, call 999.
  • Consent comes first. Today we arrange it with the placing authority for you. With the dashboard: the home or carer confirms delegated authority covers online learning and the young person agrees; we tell their social worker, and voice tutoring starts once their 7 days to object are up, or sooner if they agree. Drills and flashcards can start straight away. For a young person under 13, the person with parental responsibility consents. The FAQ has the detail.
  • First names only across the dashboard and reports, as they launch.
  • Every sensitive action will be logged:In development who viewed a flag, who changed a target, who exported a report.
  • No adverts or upselling, ever, to young people in care or to your staff.

Reports: a one-page monthly summary for Reg 44 visits, a termly report for your Reg 45 review, and a PEP progress report for each young person. They arrive with the key worker dashboard.

Examzi supports the evidence you provide to inspectors. It is not endorsed by Ofsted.

Funded by the virtual school.

Looked-after young people in Years 7 to 11 are eligible for Pupil Premium Plus, which the virtual school agrees through their Personal Education Plan. Each virtual school decides, and once a young person is funded, you pay nothing for them.

We draft the PEP request with the young person's progress so far, for you to approve by email.

Each young person gets voice tutoring all year and unlimited drills, flashcards and photo marking. Funded places add a termly review by a qualified Kings Centre of Learning teacher. Provider groups and fostering agencies can put every home or household on one contract.

Start at no cost

No upfront cost. We ask your virtual school to fund it from day one.

  1. 1

Tell us about your home. We set your home up within two working days, and arrange consent with the placing authority for you.

  2. 2

In your first week, we draft a funding request to each young person's virtual school for Examzi with a termly review by a qualified Kings Centre of Learning teacher, paid from Pupil Premium Plus. You approve it by email. Each virtual school decides for itself.

  3. 3

When it's approved, the virtual school pays, and you pay nothing for that young person.

  4. 4

If it's declined, or there's no decision within 6 weeks of the request, you choose: carry on from your own budget, or pause. We'll tell you the price before you decide, and never charge without your agreement.

Who it's for: looked-after young people in Years 7 to 11.

Virtual school budgets run to 31 March, so a request in before then can often be decided from this year's Pupil Premium Plus.

Start at no cost

Who it's for

  • Children's homes: Registered managers, key workers and DSLs

  • Provider groups: Responsible individuals, operations directors and education leads

  • Post-16 and supported accommodation: GCSE resits and routes back into education, paid from your own budget

  • Virtual schools: A way to put Pupil Premium Plus to work, with the progress so far in every PEP request

  • Fostering agencies and foster carers: Start at no cost, and the virtual school can fund each young person

  • Adopters and special guardians: if a child left care through adoption, a special guardianship order or a child arrangements order, their school can receive Pupil Premium Plus once you tell it. Start with our page for parents and carers

  • Kinship foster carers: the child is still looked after, so their virtual school can fund it, through the foster care route
